Pilates
photoPilates is attractive to anyone interested in increasing flexibility, strength, balance and improved body mechanics. This constantly evolving system is designed around deep core strength and works to tone and lengthen muscles by using specially designed equipment.  The equipment uses springs that create a smooth and constant resistance.  It is a unique and favorite compliment to most exercise programs. In addition, Pilates is recognized by doctors, chiropractors, and physical therapists as a system that assists in recovery and prevention of injury by helping the body re-learn its most efficient way of moving.  This “re-learning” can decrease back and joint pain, increase range of motion, improve posture, and prevent future injury. Pilates is for everyone.  It challenges any athlete, and works wonders for postpartum strength and mobility.

HISTORY
Joseph Pilates began developing his “Art of Contrology” in the early 1900’s.  A sickly child born in Germany, he was determined to strengthen his body by using his mind to master his muscles.  As a young man he worked in hospitals, introducing patients to his strengthening system and soon began attaching springs to the hospital beds in order to increase strength and flexibility of patients. In 1926 Joseph Pilates immigrated to the United States and set up his first studio in New York City.  As his system spread and grew, dancers like Martha Graham and George Balanchine took to it immediately, helping to spread Pilates to the general public.
